Mohammed was a successful merchant in Mecca, but he had concerns about some of the actions that took place in Mecca.
1. TRIBAL WARS -- the Arabian peninsula as dominated by many small tribes that constantly fought amongst themselves to gain power and influence. Mohammed wanted to unite these tribes to strengthen everyone as a collective sign of power.
2. INFANTICIDES -- unwanted children were often discarded, especially females. Mohammed found this completely unacceptable. All people are a part of God's sacred creation and should be treated as such.
3. POLYTHEISM -- many people in Mecca still worshipped multiple gods. Mohammed wanted to bring everyone together to worship the one true God, Allah.
4. LACK OF RESPECT FOR MECCA -- many people, especially merchants, were not giving the holy city the respect it deserved. They often used the site of the Kab'ah as a market place to sell idols and other trinkets.
