SUNNIS AND SHI'ITES
When Mohammed(pbuh) died in 632 a power struggle erupted over who was to take control of the faith. The two leading contenders were Abu Bakr, Mohammed's best friend and writer of the Koran and Ali, Mohammed's son-in-law. The majority decided to follow Abu because he was older and wiser. Many felt that Ali was too young, 29 years old, to lead, but a small group did accept Ali as the new leader.
